Mount Everest, the high-altitude rubbish dump

Decades of commercial mountaineering have turned Mount Everest into the world’s highest rubbish dump as an increasing number of big-spending climbers pay little attention to the ugly footprint they leave behind.

Fluorescent tents, discarded climbing equipment, empty gas canisters and even human excrement litter the well-trodden route to the summit of the 8,848-metre peak.

“It is disgusting, an eyesore,” Pemba Dorje Sherpa, who has summited Everest 18 times, told AFP. “The mountain is carrying tonnes of waste.” As the number of climbers on the mountain has soared — at least 600 people have scaled the world’s highest peak so far this year alone — the problem has worsened.

Meanwhile, melting glaciers caused by global warming are exposing trash that has accumulated on the mountain since Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay made the first successful summit 65 years ago.


Efforts have been made. Five years ago Nepal implemented a $4,000 rubbish deposit per team that would be refunded if each climber brought down at least eight kilogrammes (18 pounds) of waste.

On the Tibet side of the Himalayan mountain, they are required to bring down the same amount and are fined $100 per kilogramme if they don’t.

In 2017 climbers in Nepal brought down nearly 25 tonnes of trash and 15 tonnes of human waste — the equivalent of three double-decker buses — according to the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee (SPCC).

This season even more was carried down but this is just a fraction of the rubbish dumped each year, with only half of the climbers lugging down the required amounts, the SPCC says.

Instead, many climbers opt to forfeit the deposit, a drop in the ocean compared to the $20,000-$100,000 they will have forked out for the experience.

Pemba shrugs that many just don’t care. Compounding the problem, some officials accept small bribes to turn a blind eye, he said.

“There is just not enough monitoring at the high camps to ensure the mountain stays clean,” he said.



The Everest industry has boomed in the last two decades.

This has sparked concerns of overcrowding as well as fears that ever more inexperienced mountaineers are being drawn by low-cost expedition operators desperate for customers.

This inexperience is exacerbating the rubbish problem, warns Damian Benegas, who has been climbing Everest for over two decades with twin brother Willie.

Sherpas, high altitude guides and workers drawn from the indigenous local ethnic group, carry heavier items including tents, extra oxygen cylinders and ropes up the mountain — and then down again.

Previously most climbers would take their own personal kit like extra clothes, food, a sleeping bag as well as supplemental oxygen.

But now, many climbers can’t manage, leaving the Sherpas to carry everything.

“They have to carry the client’s gear so they are unable to carry down rubbish,” Benegas said.

He added that operators need to employ more high-altitude workers to ensure all clients, their kit and rubbish get safely up and down the mountain.


Raw sewage

Environmentalists are concerned that the pollution on Everest is also affecting water sources down in the valley.

At the moment the raw sewage from base camp is carried to the next village — a one-hour walk — and dumped into trenches.

This then “gets flushed downhill during the monsoon into the river”, said Garry Porter, a US engineer who together with his team might have the answer.

They are considering installing a biogas plant near Everest base camp that would turn climber poo into a useful fertiliser.

Another solution, believes Ang Tsering Sherpa, former president of the Nepal Mountaineering Association, would be a dedicated rubbish collection team.

His expedition operator Asian Trekking, which has been running “Eco Everest Expeditions” for the last decade, has brought down over 18 tonnes of trash during that time in addition to the eight-kilo climber quota.

And last month a 30-strong cleanup team retrieved 8.5 tonnes of waste from the northern slopes, China’s state-run Global Times reported.

“It is not an easy job. The government needs to motivate groups to clean up and enforce rules more strictly,” Ang said.

Today’s menu, therefore, has all the healthy ingredients along with meat and assorted nuts (small portions though of almonds, raisins, coconut) — which can be a part of your daily diet with lots of vegetables.

Chiken Badami



1 chicken of 1 1/2 kg, cut in 8 pieces 1 cup yoghurt 2 medium-sized onions, sliced 1/2 cup peeled almonds 1 tablespoon pepper corns 2 tablespoons poppy seeds 1 tablespoon coconut, desiccated 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste 1 teaspoon cumin powder 1-inch cinnamon stick 2 cardamoms Pinch of saffron 3/4 cup oil Salt to taste


Dry roast and grind together almonds, peppercorns, poppy seeds and coconut. In a bowl, put yoghurt and add the roasted ingredients plus cumin powder, ginger-garlic paste, salt. Mix well and marinate the chicken in the mixture. Refrigerate for an hour.

In a pan, heat oil and brown the onions, with a cinnamon stick and cardamom. Add chicken and saffron. Cook on low heat — better still place cooking pan on a tawa. The chicken will become tender in its own juices, but if needed add half a cup of water. Remove from heat when oil separates. Serve hot with parathas or rice.

Tomatoes in Coconut Milk



6 ripe tomatoes 1 large onion, sliced 8 whole red chillies 6 cloves garlic, chopped 2 cups coconut milk (make from the coconut powder easily available in the market) 1/4 cup oil Salt and pepper to taste


Heat oil in a pan, add garlic and fry till aroma comes out; do not brown. Remove from oil and set aside. In the same oil, fry onions till golden. Meanwhile heat water in a pot, put tomatoes in the hot water; take out from the water after a while and remove skin, but keep them whole. Keep aside. Add red chillies and garlic to the pan.

Pour in the coconut milk, and keep stirring to avoid curdling. Boil for a couple of minutes, add salt and pepper. Arrange tomatoes in the coconut milk. Cover and cook till tomatoes are soft but still whole. Remove from heat. Serve hot with daal bhari puris.

Daal Bhari Puris

1/2 cup gram daal (chana) 1/2 cup yellow moong daal 2 cloves garlic 3 peppercorns 2 black cardamoms 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds 4 cups wheat flour (you can use half maida and half wheat flour, if so desired) 4 tablespoons oil Salt to taste Oil for frying


Wash and soak daals for at least three to four hours. Drain and blend to a paste using little water. Keep aside. Grind the spices. Put two tablespoons oil in a frying pan and fry the lentil paste till brown and aroma comes out.

Add a little more oil if needed, but remember that the paste should be dry. Add salt for taste. Add the remaining oil to the flours and knead out stiff dough. I added a pinch of baking powder while kneading. Roll out the dough into big rotis. Cut out small rounds using a cutter.

Place a little daal on one and cover with another round. Make as many as you can. Heat oil and fry to a golden brown. It’s a delicious accompaniment to this tomato dish.

For convenience and to save time, you can prepare daal and freeze it and take out and thaw at room temperature whenever you need it and fill inside the puris. It will soften as the puris fry so no need to rewarm it separately.

Don’t forget that repeated reheating food is hazardous for health.

Baigan Ke Chapli Kebab



1/2 kg eggplant 1/2 cup tomatoes, diced 1/2 cup onion chopped, finely 1/2 cup green chilli, chopped 1/2 teaspoon chilli powder 1 tablespoon green coriander, chopped 2 tablespoons gram flour, more if needed Salt to taste


Wash eggplants and roast them on fire till blackish. Put in a plastic bag and seal (not in coloured one,) and let it cool a bit. Rub lightly to take of the skin, clean any leftover skin and mash. Add all the ingredients and shape into kebabs. Heat oil and fry till golden brown. Serve hot.

Omali (Arabian Bread Pudding)



6 croissants, broken into big pieces 200 gm sugar 3 cups milk 1/2 tablespoon orange blossom (essence) 3/4 cup fresh cream 1/4 cup cashew nuts 1 tablespoon raisins 2 tablespoons almonds, coarsely chopped


Grease an oblong transparent baking dish and arrange croissants in it. In a deep pan boil milk and add sugar till it is dissolved. Pour over the croissants. Let it soak. Most of the milk will be absorbed. Sprinkle orange blossom, cover with cream and spread the nuts on top. Bake in a moderate oven for 15 minutes. It can be served warm or cold.

مرد حضرات کی عید کُرتے تک محدود کیوں؟

عید قریب آتے ہی ملک بھر میں خریداری زوروں پر ہے، لیکن اگر بازاروں کا رخ کیا جائے تو وہاں مردوں کے مقابلے میں خواتین کا رش قدرے زیادہ نظر آئے گا۔

اس کی وجہ یہ نہیں ہے کہ پاکستان کے بازاروں میں خواتین ہمیشہ ہی زیادہ ہوتی ہیں، بلکہ اس کی وجہ عید ہے، جس کی تیاری میں خواتین کو کم سے کم 3 سے زائد بار بازار کا چکر لگانا پڑتا ہے۔

ایسا نہیں ہے کہ پاکستانی بازاروں میں مرد خریدار ہیں ہی نہیں، لیکن یہ ضرور ہے کہ خریداری کرنے والے مردوں کی تعداد خواتین کی نسبت کم ہے۔

اس کی ایک وجہ یہ بھی ہوسکتی ہے کہ، مرد بازار پہنچتے ہی قریبا ایک سے 2 گھنٹے کے دوران عید کے لیے اپنی تمام خریداری پوری کرلیتے ہوں گے ۔

ایسا بھی نہیں ہے کہ خریداری کے معاملے میں مرد خواتین سے زیادہ تیز ہیں، بلکہ اس کی اصل وجہ یہ ہے کہ مردوں کو عید کے لیے زیادہ چیزوں کی ضرورت نہیں پڑتی۔


زیادہ تر یہی سمجھا اور دیکھا گیا ہے کہ مرد کُرتے اور شلوار قمیض پر ہی اکتفا کرلیتے ہیں۔

اگر کوئی نوجوان زیادہ سے زیادہ چیزیں خرید بھی لے گا تو شلوار قمیض اور کُرتے کے علاوہ چپل خرید لے گا، اور کوئی کوئی بس گھڑی کی خریداری تک ہی جائے گا۔

ایسا بھی نہیں ہے کہ مردوں کی عید شلوار، قمیض، کُرتوں، جوتوں اور پینٹ شرٹ تک محدود ہے، لاکھوں نوجوان جدید دور کے حساب سے عید کے موقع پراچھوتے فیشن بھی کرتے ہیں، جس کے لیے ان کے بازاروں کے چکر خواتین کی طرح زیادہ لگتے ہیں۔

گزشتہ چند سال سے پاکستان کے مرد حضرات میں سادہ شلوار قمیض اور کُرتوں کے بجائے جدید فیشن ایبل اور گہرے رنگوں والی ملبوسات مقبول ہوئی ہیں،جنہیں دیکھ کر دوسرے مرد حضرات ذرا چونک سے جاتے ہیں۔

کراچی، اسلام آباد، لاہوراورجیسے ہی دیگر بڑے شہروں کے بہت سارے حضرات کُرتوں میں ہی عید مناتے ہیں، جب کہ دیہی علاقوں اور چھوٹے شہروں میں شلوار قمیض کو زیادہ فوقیت دی جاتی ہے۔

پینٹ شرٹ بھی زیادہ شہری علاقوں کے وہ مرد حضرات پہنتے ہیں، جو پروفیشنل ہوتے ہیں، اس لیے وہ عید کے موقع پر بھی اپنی پروفیشنل ضروریات کو مدنظر رکھ کر لباس خریدتے ہیں۔


دوسری جانب گزشتہ چند سال سے آن لائن خریداری کے بڑھتے ہوئے رجحان کے باعث بھی مرد خریدار بازاروں کے بجائے گھر بیٹھے آن لائن کپڑے خرید لیتے ہیں۔

لیکن کیا واقعی مردوں کی عید صرف کپڑوں اور کُرتوں تک محدود ہے؟

اگر لباس کی بات کی جائے تو نہ صرف پاکستان بلکہ دنیا بھر کے مسلمان مرد حضرات عید کے موقع پر سادہ اور عام لباس پر ہی گزارا کرتے ہیں۔

مگر گزشتہ چند برسوں میں مردوں کے فیشن کے رجحانات میں بھی اضافہ ہوا ہے، اور سوشل میڈیا کے اس دور میں اس میں مزید تبدیلیوں کا امکان ہے۔

آج کل آن لائن کاروباری کمپنیاں جدید دور کے تقاضوں کو مد نظر رکھ کر نہ صرف مرد حضرات کے لیے اچھوتے ڈیزائن کے کُرتے، شلوار قمیض اور پینٹ شرٹ فروخت کرتی ہیں۔

بلکہ وہ مردوں میں کلر میچنگ کے رجحانات کو بھی بڑھانے کی خاطر جوتے، گھڑیاں، چشمے، رنگ برنگی مفلر، اجرک اور لنگی ٹائپ کی چیزیں بھی پیش کرتے ہیں۔


ایسا نہیں ہے کہ ان اضافی چیزوں کی وجہ سے مرد حضرات کی شخصیت پر اثر پڑتا ہے، بلکہ ان اضافی چیزوں سے کئی نوجوان زیادہ پرکشش بھی دکھائی دیتے ہیں، لیکن یہاں یہ بات بھی یاد رکھی جائے کہ ایسا فیشن ہر مرد کی شخصیت کو بہتر نہیں بناتا۔

ایسا بالکل نہیں ہے کہ مرد حضرات کی عید صرف کُرتوں اور پینٹ شرٹ تک محدود ہے، آج کل نوجوان اور درمیانی عمر کے مرد حضرات بیوٹی سیلون کا رخ بھی کرنے لگے ہیں، جہاں وہ فیشل سمیت اپنے چہرے کو پرکشش بنانے کے لیے دیگر بیوٹی ٹپس کو بھی آزماتے ہیں۔

لیکن یہ حقیقت ہے کہ پاکستان سمیت دنیا بھر کے مردوں کی عید خواتین کے مقابلے سادہ کپڑوں اور کم فیشن پر ہی گزرتی ہے۔

MUSLIMS all over the world celebrate the holy month of Ramadan every year; they try to be patient throughout the 30 days (sometimes 29, depending on the moon sighting) and be civil to each other as per the teachings of Islam. In particular, during this month we see people going out of their way to feed the less fortunate and those caught on the roads come Iftar time. And that’s where Karachi wins head over heels against other cities.

You may be late in reaching home for Iftar during the holy month but Karachiites never shy away from their responsibility of ensuring that you break your fast on time. Even when the law and order situation was testy a few years back, you could find youngsters on the main road carrying bundles of snacks and juices, distributing them without asking about sect or religion. Now if you are standing on the main roads of the city, you will find kids handing out refreshments — be it even a date, a samosa and a juice packet — which is a huge thing when you need something to Open your fast.

That passion has now been taken to the next level, especially at a time when poverty has increased manifold. Now you can opem your fast without even paying for it, any day during the holy month. One of the leading non-governmental organisations in Karachi is feeding more than 600 people at Iftar time in the metropolis on a daily basis and their effort has now been recognized internationally thanks to the social media and TV channels. At Sehri time, they feed 250 people at an average which is a huge number considering none of them is asked to pay a rupee for the food.

If you go to the Numaish area where this lavish free buffet is served, you will find that no matter which religion you belong to — Hindu, Muslim, or Christian — no one asks you about your identity. This is the kind of harmony the founding fathers of Pakistan dreamt of and thankfully, the holy month of Ramadan offers them just that. At a time when the rich have their eyes on the many buffet deals in the market, the poor now have an outlet where they can go and break their fast without worrying about any kind of payment. They can get the stuff packed as well for later consumption and one hopes that the system continues for the next 11 months as it makes your belief in humanity, stronger.

This is just one of the many places that offer a reprieve for those who can’t afford to break their fast or even have a decent meal. People with the means make sure that the needy are served rightly in this holy month and that’s why you see dastarkhwans at regular distances all over the city. There are a few individuals who prefer paying the many NGOs to serve those in need while many small-scale restaurants ensure that food is distributed to those who can’t afford it, especially during these 30 days. When you think of others, when you help in breaking people’s fast instead of worrying about your own and when you outshine other cities through your collective efforts, that’s when things look to be heading in the right direction.
